I have a friend who isn’t much of a reader. In fact, he believes reading is a waste of time and tries to convince me of this whenever we meet 🙄 I imagine many younger people these days would agree with him.
A zen master once said, “The shortest distance between a human being and truth is a story.” For thousands of years, writers across diverse cultures have encoded life’s deepest wisdoms into sagas, fictions, legends, and romances. While our minds resist lectures and our egos deflect advice, stories have a way of planting seeds directly in our hearts and minds.
It’s like when you try to become healthy and fit. You can eat all the protein you want, but your muscles won’t grow if you don’t use them. It’s the same with the brain. You can spend 14-16 hours working every day, but if you don’t engage in critical thinking, your mind will atrophy.
How does one learn and grow and develop themselves? The only surefire way known to humans for improving their capabilities in anything is to learn from others.
The best way to learn from others is to listen to them or read about what they have to say. The investment that always pays off are books, courses, coaches, and anything that makes you understand better.
While most other assets depreciate, knowledge compounds. Every rupee spent learning pays you forever. Most people buy liabilities, the really smart ones invest in capabilities!
