On a recent flight, after landing, as we waited to disembark, the line came to a halt. A young mother was struggling with her child’s stroller, and within seconds, people began urging her to hurry.
That moment stayed with me. For most of us, it was a couple of minutes delay. For her, it was stress, a restless child, and the weight of impatient voices.
We often underestimate the simple act of recognizing that the unknown person in front of us carries a life as complex and worthy as our own.
It is natural to care most for those related to us or closest to us. But wisdom lies in stretching that circle, even slightly, to include strangers. Their struggles are as real to them as ours are to us, and their dignity matters just as much.
Too often, we shrink others down to what they mean for us: an obstacle, a mistake, a disagreement. But when we do that, the world doesn’t just become harsher for them, it becomes smaller for us too.
The true measure of character is not how we treat those who hold power over us, but how we respond to those who can do nothing for us. Do we meet inconvenience with patience or irritation? Do we respond to mistakes with understanding or contempt?
These are not grand tests of morality. They are the everyday choices no one sees, but they shape who we become. In the end, it is simple: when someone weaker, slower, or struggling crosses our path, do we lean towards kindness, or become impatient and annoyed?
Because those small, instinctive acts reveal more about us than anything we thoughtfully curate to show and display!
